Music is the language of youth culture, the vehicle by which a generation finds and expresses it's unique identity and aspirations. The Portelli Pop Icon collection starts with Frank Sinatra as the first musical icon to be adopted by teenagers in the new radio and television world. The 18 pieces I have chosen for this collection have been selected because they represent a cultural shift and are therefore a milestone along the route that is a documentary on social history spanning 6 decades. In order to bring this collection into the public domain I chose to present my concept to the Dragons' Den panel of entrepreneurs, which could either sink the boat or bring the project into the public eye at a level I have aspired to for the last 30 years. I was fortunate to have spent my teenage years
in the early 60's when music was going through a massive transition. The
first records I bought were 'What do you want' by Adam Faith and (Til) 'I
kissed you' by the Everlys. I attended numerous concerts and was privileged to see many top groups, including The Beatles (City Hall Sheffield), Rolling Stones (Queens Hall Leeds), The Hollies (Mr Smiths Manchester), Small Faces (Mojo Sheffield), Yardbirds (Marquee London). After attending a Stones concert in Leeds, I obtained my first set of autographs and from there my passion grew. Over the following years I have amassed a huge collection of autographs and records. In the main my collection has been obtained through sources as diverse as; in person signatures, private collectors, reputable dealers and auctions. I have been astonished how much the value of autographs have rocketed over the years and many people are now purchasing autographs as an investment opportunity. Gered Mankowitz is regarded as one of the
greatest rock photographers of the last 50 years. In 1963, Gered met and photographed the singing duo Chad and Jeremy, who had just signed with Ember records. One of these photos was used as the cover of the duo's first album, "Yesterday's Gone", and Gered found himself working in the music industry at a time when it desperately needed new, mould breaking images. He began to work with a new generation of producers like John Barry, Shel Talmy and Chris Blackwell photographing artists who were of his own age group and who felt at ease with him in a way that had not been possible with other photographers. At the end of 1963 Gered opened his first studio, at 9 Masons Yard in the heart of London's West End. On one side was the infamous disco "The Scotch of St.James", hangout of the pop glitterati of the time, and on the other the art gallery "Indica", partly financed by The Beatles and where John Lennon met Yoko Ono. Within a few months Gered had already begun to make a name for himself, and he was approached to photograph Marianne Faithful, who had just had a big hit with "As Tears Go By". Working closely with Marianne he got to know her manager and producer Andrew Loog Oldham. In early 1965, Oldham asked him to photograph the Rolling Stones, who he also managed and produced. This was a major turning point in Gered's career, because from this first session came the cover for "Out of Our Heads" (U.S. title "December's Children"), and as a result he was asked by the Stones to go to America with them on their record breaking 1965 autumn tour. During this 9 week (48 city) tour of the U.S. Gered photographed the Stones on stage and off, and got particularly close to Keith and Charlie. There were many adventures as Gered found himself on the road with the greatest Rock band in the world at the peak of their original success. Gered continued working with the Stones as their 'official' photographer, producing photos for albums ("Between the Buttons"; "Got Live If You Want It"; "Big Hits"; and several others), press and publicity, taken at home, in the recording studio, on stage and behind the scenes until 1967, when the band broke off with their manager, Oldham. Through the 60's, Gered continued in the music world working with Oldham at his famous Immediate label, and with many other major artists including Jimi Hendrix, Free, Traffic, The Yardbirds, The Small Faces and Soft Machine. In to the 70's with Slade, Gary Glitter, Suzi Quatro, Sweet, Elton John, Kate Bush, Eurythmics, ABC, Duran Duran and many others. Some of his portraits of rock musicians, such as The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and Slade, are now part of the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery. |

It's easy to forget that Keith Richards

Taking home a new album had a real sense of occasion, the anticipation, handing over hard-won cash, poring over outer and inner sleeves while the record played it's way into your psyche. Likewise, the weekly fix of the NME, Sounds or Melody Maker, whether read alone with a cup of tea and a record on or spread out to share was an event to be relished. Inevitably, the best pictures were cut out and stuck on the wall. These photographs from the Sixties through to the present represent a vanishing era when a great photograph was the product of skill and vision and artistry. venues fantastic value for money and top quality live entertainment. Currently based in Torrevieja, Spain, Jukebox Legends have become one of the most popular acts on the Costa Blanca, in the UK and Europe. Fiona’s voice has developed into many styles including a fantastic portrayal of 60s to 80s classics, rock & roll, Country and some very interesting tribute sounds to singers such as Connie Francis, Dusty Springfield, Karen Carpenter and Doris Day. Now, her powerful voice, true professionalism and fabulous personality are stunning audiences throughout the UK and Europe. Peter performs a wide range of songs made famous by such greats as Elvis, Cliff Richard, Guy Mitchell, Buddy Holly, Billy Fury, Eden Kane, Rick Nelson, Eddie Cochran, Bobby Darin, John Leyton, Paul Anka, Engelbert Humperdinck, Johnny Cash and many more. Peter Day and Fiona McLean are two solo artists who sing independently and also come together for some great duo and fun songs during the performance too. All the greats pop into The Twist diner to perform for Tony Tremendo, the diner owner. Featuring the Twisters, the resident house band and the Twistettes, the diners adorable waitresses... and aspiring actresses. Hear wonderful fifties radio adverts and jingles as DJ Danny Dellany from Real Music Radio broadcasts live from the diner and the Twistettes might just get their big break. It's great family fun as 'Happy Days' meets 'Buddy' in this hit after hit musical. Comedy, live band, authentic vocals and a stunning set.
