Peter Asher and Gordon Waller
| |
Through the wonders of modern
technology, from California USA to Bedfordshire UK and without a pen, notepad or tape-recorder
I am delighted to be able to present an
'interview' with
Gordon Waller
of Peter and Gordon
fame. Their sixties hits included Woman, I Go
To Pieces, World Without Love, Nobody I Know
& Lady Godiva.
He currently lives in California but
comes home from time to time to catch up with old friends and to see if the weather
has improved. He kindly agreed to answer some probing, intelligent and thought-provoking questions
but has had to make do with mine instead.

Digger: What were/are the main
differences between
the US market and the UK market for music, if any?
Gordon: I think the American market
appreciated
the actual music more.
---------------------
Digger: Is it
still a monotonous part of everyday
life having to put up with screaming girls chasing
you everywhere you go? ( I know it is for me. )
Gordon: Not for the last 30 years. It
was great
at the time but was very scary sometimes.
---------------------
Digger: How
did Westminster school prepare
you for a life in the music business?
Gordon: Westminster didn't prepare me
as I
didn't have any intentions of getting into the
music business at the time.
---------------------
Digger: If
there was someone else you could have
been in the sixties, who would it have been and why?
Gordon: I didn't want to be anyone
else.
---------------------
Digger: Which
group and which individual do
you most admire and why?
Gordon: Elvis Presley because of the
feeling and
phrasing he put into a song. Paul McCartney because of
his incessant variety of songs.
---------------------
Digger: Name
five CD albums and five videos you would take
with you if you had to be stranded on a desert island.
Gordon: Elvis Presley, Everly Bros.,
Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Beatles (Abbey Road )
King Creole, The Dam Busters, Ransom,
Guns Of Navarone, That's The Way It Is
---------------------
Digger: What
are the best and worst characteristics
of the other half of Peter and Gordon?
Gordon:
Best - basic honesty of what he felt about a situation.
Worst - forgetting the words to the songs.
---------------------
Digger: What
job would you be doing now if the British
beat boom had not happened?
Gordon: A doctor.
---------------------
Digger: What
do you think the impact of the www will
be on life, and music, in the next few years?
Gordon: I think it will make life
easier and eliminate
travelling around trying to find things.
---------------------
Digger:
Gordon, have you got anything to say to your fans?
Gordon: THANK YOU!!!!
---------------------
Thank you, Gordon, for taking
the time to answer
my questions. It was very much appreciated.
All the best in the future to you and to Peter.
Digger. June 1999.
