Here
Digger talks to Jennifer Rigby-Allen about her thriving Retro
and Vintage jewellery business which she runs from home.
Digger: Can you
please tell us about your and Nigel's backgrounds?
Jennifer: My
background was working as a personal assistant in various
companies. All the time I have been collecting and
buying vintage jewellery, clothing and accessories. I
have a very large collection of vintage powder compacts as
well as a huge collection of jewellery. Nigel’s
background is in IT, he developed the website but has nothing
to do with the day-to-day running.
Digger: And what about your passion for Vintage?
Jennifer: My passion for vintage really stems from watching
old black and white movies as a teenager and admiring the
fabulous outfits and jewellery that the famous film stars
wore.
Digger: You have a big web presence and a number of websites -
can you tell us how the Kitty group of websites evolved?
Jennifer: We have a lot of different websites to cover all
different types of costume jewellery but the reality is
that www.vintagekitty.co.uk
is our main central site and that
everything that is available through our satellite sites are
available through Vintage Kitty.
Digger: What does The Internet mean to your business and where
are your customers coming from?
Jennifer: The Internet means that we have a window to the
world and people have a window to us. The internet means
freedom to connect between ourselves and people with the same
interests and taste. I have customers from all over the
world; from the USA, Australia, Europe, Asia and most
importantly, the UK.
Digger: What sort of comments do you get from customers?
Jennifer: Amazing customer service, great photos, accurate
descriptions, carefully wrapped and packed, fabulous products,
very pleased, absolutely thrilled, you name it, they say it!!
Digger: What are the most enjoyable aspects of what you do?
Jennifer: Enjoyable aspects are getting really positive
feedback from my customers. I am absolutely thrilled when they
email me to let me know how pleased they are with their
purchases. I regularly receive comments and even photographs
of people wearing what they have bought.
Also sourcing the items are good fun as well. I go to sales,
antique fairs, auctions, boots and second hand shops; I’m
always on the lookout. You never know what you are going to
find and it’s really good fun!
Digger: Why is Retro and Vintage such a big thing for so many
people?
Jennifer: The reason I think that retro and vintage is quite
big is that it is unique, different and also makes people
stand out from the crowd. Also it's very affordable.
Digger: What are the most popular items?
Jennifer: It varies, but the most popular items are necklaces.
Lots of men buy them for their wives/girlfriends because they
are guaranteed to fit them. Also it does depend upon what
is on trend and last year I sold more brooches than anything.
Digger: What plans do you have for the future for 'Kitty'?
Jennifer: We plan to open a separate shop from VK to allow people
to sell their vintage stuff – like a vintage emporium.
