Guided
Battlefield Tours
Guided
Battlefield Tours is a limited company run by Steve and Susan Cocks.
They established the company in 2008 and during their first year of
operation received excellent client feedback. Their tours are
growing in popularity which they believe is due to their attention
to detail and attention to individual clients’ interests and
needs. “Our company is based on the principle of
personal service,” commented Susan. “We accompany
each tour to ensure that this aim is achieved for each of our
clients. Our tours are inspired by a passion for history and a
deep appreciation of the sacrifice of past generations. We want each tour to be memorable in helping to appreciate what WW1
and WW2 meant for those involved. We also want it to be memorable
for the high quality of service and facilities provided. Because of this, we limit the number of passengers on each tour and
Steve ensures we understand the reasons each person has for joining
one of our tours and we have been delighted with the response from
clients.”
Steve continued,
“We provide guided tours to key World War 1 battlefield sites in
France and Belgium and World War 2 sites in Normandy. Each
battlefield tour is carefully researched and prepared and group
members are provided with appropriate written background
information, maps and diagrams. Tours include illustrated
presentations before dinner for those who want this. I always
contact all our passengers before they travel to discuss their focus
of interest and, if necessary, advise them on how to carry out
further research into family members who served in the two World
Wars.”
Before establishing Guided Battlefield Tours both Steve and Susan
had worked in education. Steve had been the Headteacher of two
secondary schools, a job he enjoyed but it took him away from his
subject, History. His lifelong love of History and interest in the
two world wars was instilled in him by stories told by his
grandfather, who fought for four years in WW1, and his uncle,
who was awarded the DFC in WW2. Susan was an Assistant
Headteacher and had taught English. She developed her interest in
WW1 and WW2 through poetry and literature generally.
